The Aftermath of Battle — Strength in Stillness

Livia is the fourth warrior portrait in my series The Feminine Wave, and a deeply personal continuation of the story introduced in Valeria. While Valeria embodies the fierce anticipation before battle — captured as she lets grains of sand fall from her hand in a quiet moment of reflection — Livia is her counterpart: the warrior after the storm has passed.

She stands tall, gazing toward the horizon with contemplative eyes. The expression is not one of triumph, but of transformation. She has seen battle. She has survived. And in her stillness, she reclaims her power.

Historical Inspiration: Women Who Endured

The name Livia is inspired by Livia Drusilla, a formidable figure of ancient Rome — more strategist than soldier, but a survivor of political turmoil, war, and betrayal. As the wife of Augustus, she maneuvered through the complexities of Roman power with quiet resilience, shaping the empire from behind the scenes. While history rarely names women on the battlefield, there are countless unnamed gladiatrices, soldiers’ wives, female spies, and rebel leaders who endured the psychological and emotional consequences of war.

This painting honors them — the women not only in the fight, but beyond it. The ones who stood back up. The ones who rebuilt. The ones who carried the silence of survival.

Symbolism & Artistic Technique

Painted in oil and acrylic on canvas, Livia emerges from a deep, earthy orange backdrop — a color symbolizing inner fire, endurance, and the scars of conflict. Her pose, looking gently to the right, creates a visual conversation with Valeria, designed to be collected as a pair or appreciated individually as a symbol of strength in transformation.

The layered brushwork and mixed media technique offer rich textures — a metaphor for the complexity of lived experience. Her body posture is open, yet guarded; her face serene, yet shadowed by memory.

Together, Livia and Valeria form a narrative diptych — one capturing the moment before the battle, the other the moment after. They remind us that courage doesn’t end with conflict. It continues in reflection, healing, and evolution.

For the Collector

Livia is a powerful standalone work — but when displayed alongside Valeria, the connection between them deepens into something greater: a visual story of resilience, duality, and feminine endurance.

Collectors who value narrative depth, symbolism, and empowering representations of women will find in Livia a work that

transcends beauty — a portrait that speaks.

“She wore her wounds like wings.” — Atticus
